Video & Camera
Data Recovery

The card says corrupted. The edit drive won’t mount. The clip won’t open. Whatever’s on it — a wedding you can’t reshoot, a client’s brand film due Friday, a documentary subject who won’t sit down twice — the footage is usually still there. What’s broken is almost always the structure pointing to it. We recover video media in our own certified clean-room laboratory, in person, with the drive or card never leaving the building. Production companies across the Philadelphia region have trusted us with unrepeatable footage since 2011.

Card Corrupted or Drive Down? Do This First

STEP 1

Do not let the camera reformat it. “Card error — format?” is the most expensive prompt in production. Say no, eject the card, done.

STEP 2

Stop shooting on that card. Every new clip written is a chance to overwrite the footage you’re trying to save. Label it and set it aside.

STEP 3

Don’t run recovery apps on the original. If you must try software, work from a byte-level image — never the card or drive itself.

STEP 4

Clicking or dead edit drive? Power it off. Physical noise means the heads are involved. Every retry risks the platters holding your project.

STEP 5

Call with your deadline. (800) 798-0727 — speak directly to the engineer, and tell us when delivery is.

WHY VIDEO IS DIFFERENT

Recovering Files Isn’t the Same as Recovering Footage

Most recovery outfits measure success by how many files they hand back. In production, a returned file that won’t open in Premiere or Resolve is worth nothing. Video demands a different standard.

Dot Dot

Unfinalized Clips

🎞️

Battery died mid-record, or the card was pulled while writing. The video data is on the card, but the header and index that make it playable were never written. Rebuilding those structures is what turns a dead file into footage.

Dot Dot

Fragmented Long-Form

🧩

A 40-minute 4K take isn’t one neat block — it’s scattered across the media. Generic recovery software grabs the first fragment and calls it a file. Proper carving reassembles the pieces in order so the clip plays start to finish.

Dot Dot

Camera Folder Structures

📁

RED, ARRI, Blackmagic, Sony XAVC, Canon, Panasonic and DJI each wrap footage in their own folder logic and sidecar files. Recover the video and lose the structure, and your NLE still won’t see the clips. Both have to come back.

Projects, Proxies & Cache

🎚️

A failed edit drive isn’t only media — it’s your project files, renders, LUTs, sound design, and years of client archives. We recover the working environment, not just the raw clips.

Monolithic Cards

💾

Many modern SD and microSD cards are monolithic — controller and memory fused into one sealed chip with no standard contacts. Recovering those requires pinout work most labs simply don’t offer. Flash recovery →

Production RAID & NAS

HOW WE GET FOOTAGE BACK

STEP 1

Assess Before Power

Nothing gets “tested” by plugging it in. We evaluate the card or drive first and determine whether the failure is logical, electronic, or physical.

STEP 2

Image, Never Work Live

A byte-level image is taken with hardware imagers built for unstable media. Every recovery attempt afterward runs against the image — your original is never risked twice.

STEP 3

Physical Repair If Needed

Head swaps with matched donors in the clean room, micro-soldering on damaged cards, chip-off when a controller is dead. All in-house, never sent out.

STEP 4

Rebuild & Carve

Camera folder structures rebuilt, fragmented long takes reassembled, unfinalized clips repaired so they actually open in your NLE.

STEP 5

Play It Before You Pay

We verify clips play — not just that files exist. Come to the lab and watch your footage before you pay a recovery fee.

Footage We’ve Brought Back

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Don helped us recover a drive that went haywire and could have cost us an incredible loss to production. Thankfully, Don was able to quickly recover everything. He’s fast, informative throughout the process, and gave us great information to avoid issues like this in the future. If you’ve experienced a loss of data, call Tri-State Data Recovery Services first!”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I spent more money shooting a feature film in 35mm than I invested in buying a house. The award-winning film, White Men Can’t Rap, was edited and resided on a drive, but I was unable to access the data. I dropped it off at Tri-State and in 48 hours, the largest investment of my life was returned to me in a form that I could deliver it to a Hollywood studio. And, as a bonus, Don showed me a backup option that would ensure that I wouldn’t run into this type of problem in the future. Tri-State did an excellent job…and he’s got a great dog!”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“As you can imagine, if you need to call someone for data recovery you’re probably in a bad position, and mine was no exception. I was backing up my main hard drive containing the only copies of my clients’ video footage when my 1½-year-old knocked the drive to the floor. I found Don’s company online and called — he answered even though it was pretty late on a Saturday night. He gave me regular status updates and was able to recover the whole drive!”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I own a very busy recording studio and needed one of our dropped hard drives recovered quickly. Don was able to recover all of my data within a week and it was way cheaper than the other guys out there. The laboratory was very impressive and Don educated me on what had really happened to the hard drive. They literally saved my business this month!”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Video Recovery FAQ

No. Reformatting rewrites the card’s file system — the exact structure needed to locate your clips. Take the card out, put it in a labeled envelope, and stop using it. In most corruption cases the video data is still physically present on the flash; what’s broken is the index pointing to it, and that is often recoverable in a lab.

Frequently, yes. When a camera loses power or a card is pulled mid-record, the clip is written but never finalized — the header and index that make it playable are missing, so the file shows as 0 KB or won’t open. The video data itself is usually intact. Rebuilding those structures so the footage plays is a specialized process and very different from what consumer recovery software attempts.

Usually not. Consumer tools tend to grab the first fragment of a long take and stop, producing files with the right names and wrong contents. If you still have the original card or drive and haven’t written to it, the full clips can often still be carved out and reassembled properly. Stop using the original and bring it in — and bring the software results too; they tell us what was already attempted.

No, the drive has failed for a reason, and we must determine why. A rebuild forces every remaining drive to read every sector at full load for hours — and in an editing RAID those drives are usually the same age, same batch, same wear as the one that just failed. A second failure mid-rebuild is the most common way production companies lose an entire project. Image first (if the drives are healthy), rebuild from the images. If a rebuild or image already failed, stop and don’t run it again.

Tell us the date when you call and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s achievable — before you commit to anything. Some physical cases require donor parts and can’t be rushed safely; many logical and card-level recoveries move quickly. What we won’t do is promise a date to win the job and miss it while your client waits.  We will offer you an expedited service, if this is possible.

It depends on whether the failure is logical, electronic, or physical. Every case starts with a $106 diagnostic per device (tax included), due when you drop off or we receive your media — and it’s applied toward the cost of a successful recovery. You get a firm written quote before any work begins, and no charge beyond the diagnostic if we can’t recover your footage. See our full pricing breakdown.

Yes. Your media stays in our local Pennsylvania laboratory and is never sent to a third party — there is no chain of unknown hands. We work with HIPAA-covered and legally sensitive material routinely, provide documented chain of custody on request, and securely erase our copy of your data two weeks after completion unless you arrange otherwise in writing.
