Early in his career, Don Anderson provided technical support at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. That is where you learn what this kind of work is really like — people whose entire contribution is unpublished, sitting on machines, and an expectation that whoever touches those machines understands what is at stake.

Years later, in January 2013, in Trenton — twelve miles from here — he was qualified and gave expert testimony before the New Jersey Office of Administrative Law. Not a certificate bought online and not a claim on a website: a tribunal in Mercer County accepted him as an expert on the record.

That matters here beyond the courtroom, because it describes the standard the work is done to. When a recovery may have to be explained afterwards — to a committee, a funder, an insurer or opposing counsel — what decides whether the result holds up is how the drive was handled in the first hour, before anyone knew it would be questioned.
