How to Tell a Laboratory From a Front

None of these needs any expertise, and all of them work on us as well as on anyone else.

Put the address into Street View. If the business name on the building is different from the business name on the listing, the listing is riding on somebody else’s address — and the reviews you just read may not describe whoever opens your drive.

Ours: 630 Freedom Business Center Drive, Floor 3, and our headquarters office is just ours alone.

Just the number and the street, with no company name attached. Whatever comes back is who actually occupies that building. A recovery laboratory needs power, filtration, benching and controlled access; it isn’t something two businesses share by accident.

Our answer: We have a private office headquarters located at 630 Freedom Business Center Drive, Floor 3.  Call us to schedule your appointment today.

ISO 14644-1 runs 1 to 9, lower is cleaner, each step about ten times. “ISO-certified” with no number tells you nothing — Class 9 is roughly an ordinary office, and “Class 100” comes from a standard withdrawn in 2001. Ask for the document, not the adjective.

Our answer: ISO Class 4 under ISO 14644-1:2015, view the certificate today

You should get a name, not a department or a case number. If the answer involves a partner facility, a network of labs, or anywhere the person on the phone can’t name, your drive is leaving the region and the chain-of-custody instantly lost – exposing it to many risks, including theft.  The price will also have somebody’s margin stacked on the lab’s own fee.

Our answer: nothing we take in is couriered anywhere.

WHY THE ADDRESS CHECK MATTERS HERE

A Drive Only Gets One Trip

Choosing the wrong address isn’t just a wasted half hour. A physically failing drive has a limited number of spin-ups left in it, and nobody can tell you how many. Every hand-off, every plug-in, every “let’s see if it comes up on our machine” spends some of that budget — and the ones spent at a counter that can’t do anything with the drive anyway are spent for nothing.

That’s the real cost of a listing that isn’t a laboratory. The drive gets handled, powered, boxed, driven several hundred miles and handled again before anyone qualified sees it — and by then the case can be materially worse than it was in your hand. A drive that was recoverable on Monday sometimes isn’t by Friday, and nothing in the chain will tell you when that happened, because it’s been lost.

So the thirty seconds on Street View isn’t pedantry. It’s the difference between one controlled trip and several uncontrolled ones. Unplug the drive, check the address, then call — and if it’s clicking, grinding, was dropped or isn’t detected, don’t power it on again while you decide.

WHAT WE RECOVER

The Cases That Need a Clean Room and Expert Skill

Hard Drive Recovery Hard Drive Recovery

Hard Drive Recovery

Hard drives that are clicking, seized and beeping from a drop; head crashes, firmware faults and bad sectors caused from media damage. Weak or faulty head assemblies replaced with precision-matched donor parts inside our certified clean room.

SSD & NVMe Recovery SSD & NVMe Recovery

SSD & NVMe Recovery

These devices degrade while in use and develop bad sectors , firmware corruption and some times require NAND-level recovery on solid-state drives that are no longer recognized. Degraded NVMe drives require specialized hardware, not a software license.

RAID, NAS & Servers RAID, NAS & Servers

RAID, NAS & Servers

Failed rebuilds, simultaneous drive failures and degraded arrays for businesses along the 30 Bypass and Route 113. Drives bought together fail together — power down and call before anyone rebuilds.

WATER & STORM DAMAGE

Drives out of flooded basements and water events along the Brandywine. Corrosion continues long after the outside is dry, so these are the most time-sensitive cases we handle. Seal it in a bag and call.

Apple & Mac Devices Apple & Mac Devices

Apple & Mac Devices

Macs and MacBooks with a removable SSD or hard drive, Fusion Drives, iMacs, and the MacBook models that carry Apple’s data-recovery (“lifeboat”) connector. Also Airport Time Capsule and LaCie external drives. We don’t perform board repairs on current MacBooks with soldered storage — we’ll tell you that on the first call rather than after we have your machine.

SECOND OPINIONS & FORENSICS

Cases another company has called unrecoverable, or where a previous attempt made things worse. Tell us exactly what was done and by whom — it changes what’s still possible.  Bring the receipts.

IF YOU’VE ALREADY BEEN QUOTED

Bring the Quote With You

A steady share of the drives that reach this bench have already been somewhere else. Somebody sent the drive off on a free evaluation or “flat-rate”, and a four-figure number came back once the company already had it. If that’s happened to you, bring the quote. Tell us the figure, what they said failed, and what they said they’d do about it.

Two things come out of that. It tells us what has already been attempted, which changes what’s still possible — a drive powered on repeatedly, or run through consumer software, is a different job from one that was left alone. And it lets us tell you plainly whether the price was reasonable, including when the answer is that it was. It can also may let us know whether the drive has been damaged further from negligence.

HOW THE PROCESS WORKS

LOCAL, SECURE & FAST

01

CALL FIRST

Call first to discuss your case and schedule your appointment, then drive about 30 minutes east to our King of Prussia office and hand the drive to the engineer.

02

Thorough Diagnostic

We identify exactly what failed and what’s involved in the recovery attempt. No third-party queue and no guessing — and we call you with the answer along with the probability of success moving forward with the attempt.

03

Transparent Quote

Receive a phone call within 24 hours, or faster if expedited, with a firm quote and details about the work involved in your recovery attempt before any work starts. No charge beyond the diagnostic if we can’t recover it.

04

Recovery Performed

We reverse engineer and repair the drive itself — failed heads, seized motors, corrupted firmware — until it can be read again using state-of-the-art tools like the PC-3000 and safely extract the targeted data onto a good drive – inside a clean room independently certified to ISO Class 4.

05

Verify & Return

Review the recovered data in person at our King of Prussia office before making payment. In most cases we can separate any damaged files for you, so you know exactly what you are paying for. Collect at our King of Prussia office, or we return it to you securely while keeping a copy for 2 weeks.

NO BALLOONED QUOTES

WHAT CERTIFIED LABORATORY DATA RECOVERY COSTS

$106

Diagnostic · Per Drive · Tax Included

Applied toward a successful recovery. Tells you what failed, odds of success – if the recovery attempt is feasible, and what it will cost, before you commit to anything.

$400+

Typical Single-Drive Recovery

Depends on whether the failure is logical, electronic or mechanical and how much time is involved in the work. Clean room work with donor parts sits higher. You get a phone call with a firm quote first.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DOWNINGTOWN DATA RECOVERY FAQ

Put both street addresses into Street View and read the sign over the door. One of them is a computer shop trading under its own name, hosting a national recovery company’s listing — nobody at that counter opens drives, and anything left there is couriered out of state, exposing your drive to many risks. Then search each street address on its own, without a company name, and see what else comes back at it. The check costs nothing and takes about thirty seconds. Ask both companies the same question afterwards: is the company named on the listing the same company that opens the drive?

The phrase covers two different jobs. One is running software on a drive that still works — undeleting files, repairing a file system, pulling data off a machine that won’t boot due to a computer or software issue. That needs no special facility. The other is opening a drive that has physically failed, replacing its internal parts with precision-matched donor components in filtered air, accessing/repairing firmware modules and reading it with hardware built for the purpose. Only the second requires a certified clean room. If your drive clicks, beeps, grinds, was dropped, got wet, or isn’t detected at all, running software on it will make things worse.

Ask for a number, because the letters alone mean nothing. ISO 14644-1 defines nine classes, 1 to 9, and lower is cleaner — each step permits roughly ten times more airborne particles than the one below. ISO Class 9 is about as clean as an ordinary office, and “Class 100” comes from a US federal standard withdrawn in 2001. Our clean room equipment was assembled new in 2020 and independently certified to ISO Class 4 under ISO 14644-1:2015 by an outside firm and signed by a NEBB-certified technician. You can view our certificate and credentials on this page.

Unplug it and leave it alone. Clicking usually means the heads can’t read the servo data written on the platter — often a head failure rather than platter damage, which is frequently recoverable, but only if the drive stops now. Every additional power-up risks the heads touching the recording surface, and when that happens magnetic material comes off the platter and does not come back. Don’t run recovery software, don’t freeze it, and don’t let anyone open it outside a certified clean room.  We have put together an emergency guide for dropped drives on this page.

About thirty minutes east. Client drop-off and pickup are at our corporate office, 630 Freedom Business Center Drive, Floor 3, King of Prussia, and there’s parking. You hand the drive to the engineer who will do the work and collect it from the same person. The recovery laboratory itself is a secured Montgomery County facility we no longer open to visitors, because we handle medical records and legal evidence and restricted access is part of the chain of custody.

Every case starts with a $106 diagnostic per drive, tax included, applied toward a successful recovery. You receive a written quote before any work begins, and there’s no charge beyond the diagnostic if the data can’t be recovered. Most single-drive physical recoveries fall in the $400 and up range; RAID and server work is quoted per case after diagnosis. We publish these figures because you can’t compare what isn’t published. Thirty seconds on Street View settles it. Ours is 630 Freedom Business Center Drive, our clean room reads ISO Class 4, and the engineer who answers the phone is the one who opens your drive.
