In Media, a Drive Is Often More Than a Drive
Media is where Delaware County’s courts, county offices and a considerable share of its law firms actually sit. That changes the shape of the work. A failed drive here is frequently attached to something with a docket number, a claim, a deadline or an opposing party — and the question stops being can the files come back and becomes can anyone demonstrate what happened to them.
Those two questions are answered in the first hour, before anyone knows the drive will be contested. Imaging with a hardware write-blocker so the original is never altered. A written custody record showing who held it and when. One identifiable person who can say what was done — and, if it comes to it, say so under oath. Don Anderson has been qualified and given expert testimony before the New Jersey Office of Administrative Law.
None of that survives a courier. The moment a drive is boxed and sent to a “partner” facility nobody will name, the custody record has a hole in it, and that hole cannot be filled retroactively. So tell us on the first call if litigation, an insurance claim or an employment matter is even possible. It costs nothing to handle a drive properly from the start and everything to wish you had.
THREE QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU HAND IT OVER
How to Check a Data Recovery Company
Each one has a document or a name behind it. Ask them of anyone you’re considering, including us.
1. DOES ANYONE AT THIS ADDRESS OPEN DRIVES?
“Drop-off,” “intake” and “coordination point” all mean no. Companies using those words are being straight with you as far as it goes — the part they leave out is where elsewhere is, the name of the person opening your drive and viewing your data, and how many hands the drive passes through getting there.
2. WHERE IS THE LABORATORY, AND CAN I SPEAK DIRECTLY TO THE ENGINEER?
A single laboratory answers with an address and a name. If the answer is a partner facility, a network of repair shops, or a state you’d have to ship to, your drive is leaving the region, being exposed to many risks including data theft — and the price will have somebody’s margin stacked on the lab’s own fee.
3. WILL YOU WRITE-BLOCK IMAGE IT, AND GIVE ME A CUSTODY RECORD?
Drives that may contain data for a potential legal case must be handled differently. Once the chain-of-custody has been broken, then anyone could have done anything to it. Ask this even if litigation seems unlikely today. It costs nothing to have the drive handled properly from the start, and it’s the only version of the question that can’t be answered later.
Our answer: yes, and yes, in writing.
EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE
A NAMED ENGINEER, OR AN UNNAMED CHAIN
WHAT WE RECOVER
FROM CASE FILES TO FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS
Hard Drive Recovery
Hard drives that are clicking, seized and beeping from a drop; head crashes, firmware faults and bad sectors caused from media damage. Weak or faulty head assemblies replaced with precision-matched donor parts inside our certified clean room.
SSD & NVMe Recovery
These devices degrade while in use and develop bad sectors , firmware corruption and some times require NAND-level recovery on solid-state drives that are no longer recognized. Degraded NVMe drives require specialized hardware, not a software license.
RAID, NAS & Servers
Failed rebuilds, simultaneous drive failures and degraded arrays for firms, practices and county-adjacent businesses. Power down and call before anyone attempts a rebuild.
LEGAL & EVIDENTIARY MEDIA
Drives attached to litigation, insurance claims and employment matters. Write-block imaging, deleted data parsing, court ready forensics reports, documented custody from intake to return, court-ready reporting and expert testimony where required.
Apple & Mac Devices
Macs and MacBooks with a removable SSD or hard drive, Fusion Drives, iMacs, and the MacBook models that carry Apple’s data-recovery (“lifeboat”) connector. Also Airport Time Capsule and LaCie external drives. We don’t perform board repairs on current MacBooks with soldered storage — we’ll tell you that on the first call rather than after we have your machine.
SECOND OPINIONS & FORENSICS
TWO DIFFERENT TRADES
Computer Repair and Laboratory Data Recovery Are Not the Same Job
The words sit next to each other on a lot of signs, so it’s worth being precise about what each one physically involves. Computer repair is the business of making a machine work again. Software is reinstalled, components are replaced, and a failing drive is treated as a part — taken out, swapped for a new one, and the machine handed back running. That is a legitimate trade with its own skills. What it is not built to do is get the contents off the part that failed.
Laboratory data recovery and reverse-engineering starts from the opposite end. The drive is the job, and the machine it came out of is irrelevant. A head assembly is replaced with precision-matched donor parts in filtered air, firmware and service-area faults are repaired with hardware built for that purpose, and the data is targeted after building a file table while being imaged sector by sector before anything irreversible is attempted — because the recovery is performed on the clone, never on your original. None of that equipment exists on a repair bench, and there is no reason it should.
The distinction matters because the tools of one trade actively damage the other’s cases. On a physically failing drive, running recovery software or consumer imaging software is the worst available option: it forces hours of continuous reading across a drive that may have minutes of life left – unable to work around media damage or targeting the data, and every power cycle risks the heads touching the platter. Reinstalling an operating system to get a machine booting again overwrites the area your files occupy. Both are correct repair procedure. Both can end a recovery permanently.
So the question to ask isn’t who’s good — it’s what happens to your drive next, and where. Ask whether anyone at that address opens drives, which ISO class their clean room is certified to, and whether they’ll email you the certificate. If the drive is going somewhere else, ask where and who receives it. Those answers are the same three we publish on every page we write, and they’re the only ones that tell you which of the two trades your case is actually going to.
