1. DOES ANYONE AT THIS ADDRESS OPEN DRIVES?

“Drop-off,” “intake” and “coordination point” all mean no. Companies using those words are being straight with you as far as it goes — the part they leave out is where elsewhere is, the name of the person opening your drive and viewing your data, and how many hands the drive passes through getting there.

2. WHERE IS THE LABORATORY, AND CAN I SPEAK DIRECTLY TO THE ENGINEER?

A single laboratory answers with an address and a name. If the answer is a partner facility, a network of repair shops, or a state you’d have to ship to, your drive is leaving the region, being exposed to many risks including data theft — and the price will have somebody’s margin stacked on the lab’s own fee.

3. WILL YOU WRITE-BLOCK IMAGE IT, AND GIVE ME A CUSTODY RECORD?

Drives that may contain data for a potential legal case must be handled differently. Once the chain-of-custody has been broken, then anyone could have done anything to it. TWO DIFFERENT TRADES

Computer Repair and Laboratory Data Recovery Are Not the Same Job

The words sit next to each other on a lot of signs, so it’s worth being precise about what each one physically involves. Computer repair is the business of making a machine work again. Software is reinstalled, components are replaced, and a failing drive is treated as a part — taken out, swapped for a new one, and the machine handed back running. That is a legitimate trade with its own skills. What it is not built to do is get the contents off the part that failed.

Laboratory data recovery and reverse-engineering starts from the opposite end. The drive is the job, and the machine it came out of is irrelevant. A head assembly is replaced with precision-matched donor parts in filtered air, firmware and service-area faults are repaired with hardware built for that purpose, and the data is targeted after building a file table while being imaged sector by sector before anything irreversible is attempted — because the recovery is performed on the clone, never on your original. None of that equipment exists on a repair bench, and there is no reason it should.

The distinction matters because the tools of one trade actively damage the other’s cases. On a physically failing drive, running recovery software or consumer imaging software is the worst available option: it forces hours of continuous reading across a drive that may have minutes of life left – unable to work around media damage or targeting the data, and every power cycle risks the heads touching the platter. Reinstalling an operating system to get a machine booting again overwrites the area your files occupy. Both are correct repair procedure. Both can end a recovery permanently.

So the question to ask isn’t who’s good — it’s what happens to your drive next, and where. Ask whether anyone at that address opens drives, which ISO class their clean room is certified to, and whether they’ll email you the certificate. If the drive is going somewhere else, ask where and who receives it. Those answers are the same three we publish on every page we write, and they’re the only ones that tell you which of the two trades your case is actually going to.

It means the address is a separate entity that collects drives and forwards them for an arrangement. Drop-off site, intake location, coordination point — they’re different words for a counter, not a laboratory. That much is honest. What the phrase doesn’t tell you is where the drive actually goes, who opens it, and how many hands it passes through on the way. Ask all three before you hand anything over, and notice whether the answer names an actual building and an actual person.

My drive may end up as evidence. Does it matter who handles it first?

How far is Media from your office?

About thirty minutes up the Blue Route. Client drop-off and pickup are at our corporate office, 630 Freedom Business Center Drive, Floor 3, King of Prussia, and there’s parking. You hand the drive to the engineer who will do the work and collect it from the same person. The recovery laboratory itself is at a secured Montgomery County facility we no longer open to visitors, because we handle medical records and legal evidence and restricted access is part of the chain of custody.

What’s the difference between computer repair and data recovery?

They are two different trades that happen to involve the same object.
