YEARS OF WORK, ONE DRIVE

Whatever part of Philadelphia you’re in, Manayunk, University City, Old City, or Rittenhouse Square just moments from Center City – research data has a shape we recognize immediately. It accumulates for years on one machine. It is rarely backed up properly, because backing it up was always going to happen after the next deadline. It is often in formats only one piece of software can open. And a great deal of it cannot be regenerated at any price — the subjects have moved on, the funding period closed, the instrument time is gone, the fieldwork season ended.

It is also the most time-bound work we handle. Defense dates, grant submissions, conference deadlines and IRB timelines do not move because a drive failed. That pressure is exactly what makes academic cases go wrong: someone spends four days trying things before making the call, and those four days are what decides the outcome.

So tell us the date first. We will tell you honestly whether it’s achievable rather than taking your money to find out. Some cases go back the same week. A mechanical failure needing a matched donor drive depends on sourcing that nobody can rush, and you deserve to know that on day one.

WHAT WE RECOVER DATA FROM

Client Files to Family Archives

Hard Drives & Externals Hard Drives & Externals

Hard Drives & Externals

Clicking, beeping, seized and dropped drives — including the portable that lived in a backpack. Head assemblies replaced with precision-matched donor parts inside our certified clean room.

SSD & NVMe Recovery SSD & NVMe Recovery

SSD & NVMe Recovery

These devices degrade while in use and develop bad sectors , firmware corruption and some times require NAND-level recovery on solid-state drives that are no longer recognized. Degraded NVMe drives require specialized hardware, not a software license.

LAB NAS & RAID ARRAYS LAB NAS & RAID ARRAYS

LAB NAS & RAID ARRAYS

Shared group storage, RAID units and departmental servers. Drives bought together fail together, which is why a rebuild rather than the first failure is usually what ends an array. Power down and call first.

usb

USB Sticks & SD Cards

Camera cards, Bent USB drives, recorders and field-collection devices, including monolithic chips with no accessible test points. Fieldwork you cannot repeat is worth treating carefully from the first minute.

Apple & Mac Devices Apple & Mac Devices

Apple & Mac Devices

Macs and MacBooks with a removable SSD or hard drive, Fusion Drives, iMacs, and the MacBook models that carry Apple’s data-recovery (“lifeboat”) connector. Also Airport Time Capsule and LaCie external drives. We don’t perform board repairs on current MacBooks with soldered storage — we’ll tell you that on the first call rather than after we have your machine.

THESES & DISSERTATIONS THESES & DISSERTATIONS

THESES & DISSERTATIONS

Chapters, drafts, citation libraries and the research behind them — typically on one laptop with a sync folder that turns out not to have covered everything. Tell us the defense date when you call.

HOW THE PROCESS WORKS

LOCAL, SECURE & FAST

01

CALL FIRST

Call first to discuss your case, deadline and to schedule your appointment, then drive about 30 minutes out the Schuylkill to our King of Prussia office and hand the drive to the engineer.

02

Thorough Diagnostic

We identify exactly what failed and what’s involved in the recovery attempt. No third-party queue and no guessing — and we call you with the answer along with the probability of success moving forward with the attempt.

03

Transparent Quote

Receive a phone call within 24 hours, or faster if expedited, with a firm quote and details about the work involved in your recovery attempt before any work starts. No charge beyond the diagnostic if we can’t recover it.

04

Recovery Performed

We reverse engineer and repair the drive itself — failed heads, seized motors, corrupted firmware — until it can be read again using state-of-the-art tools like the PC-3000 and safely extract the targeted data onto a good drive – inside a clean room independently certified to ISO Class 4.

05

Verify & Return

Review the recovered data in person at our King of Prussia office before making payment. In most cases we can separate any damaged files for you, so you know exactly what you are paying for. Collect at our King of Prussia office, or we return it to you securely while keeping a copy for 2 weeks.

NO BALLOONED QUOTES

WHAT CERTIFIED LABORATORY DATA RECOVERY COSTS

$106

Diagnostic · Per Drive · Tax Included

Applied toward a successful recovery. Tells you what failed, odds of success – if the recovery attempt is feasible, and what it will cost, before you commit to anything.

$400+

Typical Single-Drive Recovery

Depends on whether the failure is logical, electronic or mechanical and how much time is involved in the work. Clean room work with donor parts sits higher. You get a phone call with a firm quote first.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

UNIVERSITY CITY DATA RECOVERY FAQ

They run backwards from how most people read them: lower is cleaner, and each step is roughly a factor of ten. ISO Class 4 permits about ten times fewer airborne particles than ISO 5. “Class 100” is older still — it comes from FED-STD-209E, the US federal standard withdrawn in 2001 and replaced internationally by ISO 14644-1, and it corresponds to roughly ISO 5. So a lab advertising ISO 5 or Class 100 is not describing a cleaner room than ISO Class 4; it is describing a dirtier one. Our clean room equipment was independently certified to ISO Class 4 under ISO 14644-1:2015 by an outside testing firm and signed by a NEBB-certified technician, and we will email you the certificate before you commit to anything. Ask anyone you are considering for theirs.

Completely normal, and they’re being straight with you. University IT supports institutional systems, managed machines and the network. A personally owned laptop or an external drive holding four years of your own research usually falls outside what they’re staffed, equipped or permitted to work on — and physical recovery from a failed drive requires a certified clean room and hardware no IT department has any reason to own. Being told no by IT isn’t the end of the road. It just means the next call is to a laboratory rather than a help desk.

Tell us the date on the first call and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s achievable — before you commit, not after we have your drive. Academic work is the most deadline-bound recovery we handle: defense dates, grant submissions, conference deadlines and IRB timelines don’t move because a drive failed. Some cases are back in a day. A mechanical failure needing a matched donor drive depends on sourcing, which we can’t rush. You’ll get a real answer either way rather than an optimistic one.  Most cases are completed within a week depending on the level of damage and parts availability.

Yes. Instrument-attached machines, imaging and microscopy output, sequencing data, long-running simulation results and shared lab NAS units are all routine work. Two things help enormously: tell us the file formats and the software that produced them, because the recovery target is often a specific dataset rather than an entire volume, and stop using the machine immediately. A drive that’s still being written to while somebody tries to salvage what they can is actively overwriting what you want back.

About 30 minutes straight out the Schuylkill Expressway. Client drop-off and pickup are at our corporate office, 630 Freedom Business Center Drive, Floor 3, King of Prussia. You hand the drive to the engineer who will do the work and collect it from the same person. The recovery laboratory itself is at a secured Montgomery County facility we no longer open to visitors, because we handle medical records and legal evidence and restricted access is part of the chain of custody.

Yes. Students receive a permanent 20% discount with valid ID, alongside active military and veterans. Every case still starts with the same $106 diagnostic per drive, tax included, applied toward a successful recovery, and you get a firm quote before any work begins. If the data can’t be recovered there’s no charge beyond the diagnostic.

Check what was actually syncing before you assume. Cloud sync replicates what happens on your machine rather than preserving versions — delete a folder and it deletes everywhere, and anything you excluded from sync or kept outside your synced folders is simply not there. On current Macs the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted against a controller on that same board, so recovery means board-level micro-soldering rather than software. Stop using the machine and call before anyone attempts a repair.
